'WELL-SEEN'

The Beauty of the Human Form - Paintings by Arye Shapiro

August 3rd - September 28th, 2024

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 7th, 2-5

Artist’s Statement

In my artwork, I focus on drawing, sculpting, and painting the human figure from life.

My painting process is an open-ended collaboration with my model. I ask them to interact with a meaningful personal object in any poses they wish. Sometimes I enjoy developing a pose that combines attractive sensuality with slightly unsettling elements.

After I make many quick gesture drawings of my model in various poses, we agree on the pose that is both most interesting to me and comfortable for them. Next I make more detailed drawings and small painting studies. Then I paint on a larger framed canvas with dimensions that support good composition. I mix bright complementary colors to create more neutral skin tones surrounded by a contrasting environment.

I’ve studied and been influenced by the paintings of Philip Pearlstein, Lucian Freud, and Alice Neel.

Anne is a multimedia designer and yoga instructor, creating artwork that invites the harmony of nature’s blueprint into your space. She finds joy in incorporating nature's treasures into her creations. Her hiking adventures lead her to collect flint rock, crystals, leaves, shells, fossils, antlers, skulls, and more—all of which find a purpose in her artistry.

Drawing from the wisdom of various healers and spiritual coaches, she infuses her art with high vibrations and healing intentions. Through a blend of sound, prayer, smudging, essential oils, crystals, and sacred geometry, each piece becomes a vessel of spiritual resonance.

From the artist: "I have no fear when I paint because I want my art to be my truth. I want my art to be a reflection of who I am and what I have experienced. To some I am a disaster and to a small few I am a beautiful disaster who’s just trying to make it through life one day at a time."
